Please, settle in, grab a beverage of your choice (mine’s tea). I’m Lizzie, and I’m here to share some thoughts with you.
I named this blog after Emily Dickinson’s ‘Hope is the thing with feathers’. For me, ‘the thing with feathers’ is simply that which sits most within your heart, whether that’s ‘hope’, in the case of Dickinson’s speaker, or another feeling entirely. It is a driving passion, a force from within, whatever it is that inspires you in life.
I think for me, this is whatever I feel when I read and write. What it is I experience when forming the details of some new thing, chasing after a creation, discovering words and images that inspire something within me. I don’t even really have a name for it, but I know it is my feathered thing.
This blog exists because of that feeling, and I hope to share some of my passions here with you, whether it’s through book reviews, film reviews, writing, or discussions of my PhD in Creative Writing.
My postgraduate research at The University of Nottingham consists of creating a poetry collection focusing on female figures in world mythology and folklore, in order to revive and uncover stories often overlooked within Western publishing, and to understand how poetics can help us to convey different stories and illustrate the blurred boundaries between reality and the mystical found in mythology. I’m loving every second of it.
I hope you enjoy you time in this little corner of the internet.
